Cycling around the lake

I’m lucky enough to live near miles of cycling without worry of people not paying close enough attention to the road … cycling around the lake in a city park. Here are some pictures from and of my latest ride:

I got a new bike! After ordering, assembling, riding, and loving the Motobecane Fantom Cross bicycle (something I have yet to post about), I decided it was time for a fixie. Why? I wanted to see what riding a fixed gear bicycle was all about.

The package straight off the UPS truck from Bikes Direct.

And right out of the box. It’s obvious there isn’t near as much assembly and set-up required for a fixed gear bicycle compared to one with gears and shifters. Just the saddle w/attached seat post, front wheel, handlebars, and brakes. The Bikes Direct website says that it only takes about 20 minutes to set-up. I’m not experienced in bike assembly, so it took me more like an hour. Gotta make sure that the brakes work properly I guess.

Motobecane Messenger Assembly

Fully assembled. I’ve ridden the bike about 25 miles so far. The saddle is much more comfortable than that of the Fantom Cross, but I think I’m still going to replace it with a Brooks B17.

And if you haven’t ridden a bike since you were a kid, you should try it again — it’s a lot of fun.

Guess I should get a 4-wheel:

4 WHEEL BICYCLE Easier to pedal than a regular bike because you are sitting down, not standing up on the pedals.

I’m so tired of standing on my pedals! I’ve always wondered what that triangular shaped thing should be used for on my regular bike — looks like it might be something to be sat upon, but I just don’t know. Might be decoration.
